What does "A square meal" mean?

Today it means: A good nutritional meal

Plates in the Navy were made square so as to sit neatly into the table placed over each cannon at mealtimes. The table had square slots for the plates to fit into so that they didnt slide around the table as the ship rolled. Food in the Royal Navy in the 19th century was very good and being well fed was one of the main reasons for joining.
