Today it means: A nautical mile is one minute of latitude.

A nautical mile is a measure of distance based on the circumference of the earth, and is equal to one minute of latitude. It is different to a statute (land measured) mile. One nautical mile = 1.1508 statute miles. Nautical miles are often used for navigation on UK charts.
